Originally part of the Boulder County Humane Society, Longmont Humane Society became an independent non-profit animal shelter in 1972. It began with a small, dedicated team focused on providing compassionate care for animals in need, and over the decades, it has transformed into a leading sanctuary, devoted to ensuring the well-being of each animal that enters its doors.
By 1985, after a decade of service, the shelter outgrew its original facility. A new, larger space—affectionately known as "the dome"—was constructed on land provided by Boulder County. This milestone marked the beginning of a new chapter, where Longmont Humane Society was recognized for its high standards of care, receiving accolades from the American Humane Association (AHA) as a top-tier shelter.
The 1990s saw the opening of a spay-neuter clinic, helping to reduce euthanasia rates and expand services for adopted animals. Yet, as the community continued to grow, the need for a larger facility became evident. In 2008, a second capital campaign led to the creation of the Longmont Humane Society Allen Center, a state-of-the-art 58,000-square-foot shelter capable of housing more than 200 dogs, cats, and small mammals. Today, the center is supported by 80 staff members and 400 volunteers, caring for over 4,000 animals annually. With an in-house veterinary team, the shelter ensures that every animal is spayed or neutered before going home, performing around 3,000 surgeries each year.
Longmont Humane Society has also developed several programs aimed at saving the lives of the community’s most vulnerable pets. These initiatives include the Alternatives to Intake (ATI) program, which helps pet owners keep their pets by offering resources, and the Foster Program, which provides a temporary home for over 1,100 animals until they are ready for adoption. Additional services such as the Public Pet Pantry, Safekeep Program, and Kids and Critters Camps further illustrate the organization’s dedication to the broader community, offering support during difficult times and fostering a deeper understanding of animal care among future generations.
Behavioral assistance is a cornerstone of Longmont Humane Society’s offerings, with the Training and Behavior Modification Department (TBMD) providing lifetime behavioral support for all adopted dogs. The TBMD also works with rescue groups to help rehabilitate animals with behavioral concerns, ensuring they, too, have the opportunity for a better life.
As of 2022, Longmont Humane Society celebrated 50 years of service to the pets and people of Longmont, Colorado. With an unwavering commitment to the holistic care of every animal, they proudly maintain a 98% placement rate, far exceeding both Colorado and national averages. The team’s dedication reflects their core belief: every animal deserves a second chance and a loving home.
